Are Moms Your Target Market

After reading a blog post from Small Business News this morning called, Marketing to Moms, I thought it would have great value in repeating the statistics revealed and discuss how to leverage those statistics for my internet marketing readers.

There are about 34 million moms online.

Quite a chuck of the population, eh? Reverse engineer some of the shopping habits, such as, what day of the week do they shop, what time of the day and target your advertising dollars to match their shopping habits.

Many of them learn about products for the first time not via TV, but online.

Be innovative in introducing new products via frequent channels that moms use. Do your homework and refer to market research to base your business decisions on where to present new product information.

They often turn to web resources like online reviews and search to follow up.

Incorporate reviews on the product pages of your website, as well as in multiple shopping engines. Do research to find which review sites are most credible with moms. You might consider distributing a survey to your customer list to find this out.

They seek online destinations for purchasing to save time.

Make it part of your USP to design a better mousetrap (website) that saves Mom time in the shopping process from start to finish. You may want to examine the userabilty of internal search, ease of checkout (1 page checkout) ,faster shipping, and ease of tracking orders.

Other noteable facts include:

70% of online moms made a purchase on the web in the past 12 months.
Their top 3 categories were apparel and accessories (36% made a purchase); books, music and video (31%); and toys and games (24%).
38% of moms in one survey spent at least $200 on online purchases over the past year.
13% spent $1,000 or more.

So, in theory the best way to reach some of the 34 million moms is via links, sponsored search and social networks. Pretty broad choices huh? Well there you go, at least you have a starting point, now it is up to you to start surveying, gather data from your customers and start multiple campaigns to test the moms in your target market and meet them where they are with your message. It could take years, but it will be a great advantage to have the moms shopping at your store.

Let me hear your comments below on how you are capturing the mom audience.
