Just as if you were starting a brick and mortar business, you need to cover all of the bases and make sure that your new internet marketing business is viable. You may have already done your market research and developed your branding, but there is something which is essential to the success of your new venture which should come before you set up your website and hang out your shingle, so to speak – you need a business plan.
As a business owner, your business plan is your road map to where you want to take your business. Every business wants the same thing at its core, of course –profitability and growth. You already know that, but what your business plan will do is lay out the route which can get you from start up to successful, profitable business. You may have heard plenty of stories about entrepreneurs getting rich in short order from their internet marketing businesses; while there are a few such overnight success stories, you can't assume that this is going to happen. As in every other economic sector, businesses become successful through developing and implementing a solid, well thought out business plan.

So what should your business plan look like? You need to lay out what your new internet marketing business is all about, what your market is, who your competition is and indeed, how competitive of a market niche your business will be plying its trade in. You'll also need to determine what your marketing strategies will be to reach this target market and have an idea of your projected budget including your costs: web hosting, advertising and any other costs which will have an impact on your bottom line. In short, your business plan should be modeled along the same lines as those used by any other kind of business.

When you write your business plan, sit down and think carefully through all of the challenges which your new internet marketing business may face as it gets off the ground. You're developing a plan to get you from day one through the future. While of course there will be unforeseen developments along the way, you need to anticipate what you can and write a business plan which is a viable road map to making your business a success.

Remember the slogan of the Boy Scouts: Be Prepared. That's what a business plan is all about. Too many internet marketers fail because they don't think about how they're going to make their business profitable. There's a lot more to running a profitable internet marketing business than simply throwing up a website and some affiliate links – when you plan ahead, you can be prepared and have a course to success plotted out ahead of you.
